At just 18 years old, Danish basketball player Maya Madsen has already experienced how much the game can offer, both on and off the court. From her earliest memories of playing basketball with her family to competing against experienced players in Denmark's highest women's league, every stage of her journey has helped her discover what she is capable of achieving. Representing Denmark at three European youth championships has strengthened her ambitions, while her dedication to improving continues to shape her development. With an impressive ability to contribute defensively, collect rebounds and create opportunities for her teammates, Maya is building a future in a sport that has become an essential part of her life. A passion that began within the family

Basketball has always been close to Maya's heart, largely because of the people who introduced her to the game. Growing up in a family where basketball was already an important part of everyday life, she had several examples to learn from. Her older sister and brother both played, while her father became the person who guided her through her first experiences on the court. "My older sister, my older brother and my dad have all played basketball. My dad was actually my first coach, so he was the one who started my basketball journey. I really enjoyed playing from the beginning, and I have continued to develop ever since."

What began as a family connection gradually became something Maya wanted to pursue for herself. As the years passed, she discovered the satisfaction of improving her skills, competing alongside teammates and working towards new goals. Basketball now occupies such an important place in her life that imagining her everyday routine without it has become difficult. "I love winning, and I love getting better. Basketball has become such a big part of my life that I honestly don't know what I would do with all my free time if I didn't have it. I love my teammates, and I love the sport so much. I think it would be a great privilege if I could eventually make basketball my profession."

Her enthusiasm is reflected in the way she approaches the game. Every practice provides another opportunity to learn, while the friendships she has developed along the way make the experience even more meaningful.

Finding her own identity on the court

Having two older siblings who played basketball also gave Maya the opportunity to observe different approaches to the game. Her sister particularly enjoyed the defensive responsibilities, while her brother preferred expressing himself through scoring and shooting. Those contrasting styles have helped Maya recognize the qualities she enjoys bringing to the court herself. "My sister was very good defensively. She was really focused on setting screens, taking rebounds and doing the defensive work. My brother was almost the complete opposite because he was much more offensive-minded. He loved scoring and shooting. I think I'm somewhere in between the two of them because I really enjoy scoring, but I also love playing good defense."

That combination has become increasingly noticeable as Maya has developed. She possesses the physical presence to compete for rebounds while also contributing through her shooting, passing and defensive awareness. Her willingness to take responsibility in different situations gives her opportunities to influence a game beyond the number of points she scores.

Hørsholm 79ers: a club that helped her grow

For much of her basketball journey, Hørsholm 79ers has been a familiar and important environment. The Danish club gave Maya the opportunity to discover competitive basketball, develop friendships and gradually challenge herself against older players. Looking back on those early years, she remembers how comfortable she felt among her teammates and how much the encouragement of others contributed to her enjoyment. "I had a lot of friends on my team, and everyone made me feel very welcome. When I got a little older, I started playing with the older girls as well, and they welcomed me just as much. I really enjoyed working towards being part of their team while still playing with girls my own age. I've also had some really good coaches over the years, and some of them have become people I now consider friends."

The opportunity to play in different age groups encouraged Maya to keep challenging herself. Training and competing alongside older teammates exposed her to new situations, allowing her to become more confident and gain experience at a higher level. The relationships she built at Hørsholm remain an important part of her story. They also demonstrate how much a supportive sporting environment can contribute to a young player's development. Although Maya's youth team did not always enjoy successful seasons in terms of results, certain moments have stayed with her. One particularly meaningful memory came during the final game she played alongside the girls from her own birth year, 2008. The team entered that game knowing that victory would be difficult. What followed became a memorable way to conclude their time together. "My own team didn't win that many games, but I remember our very last game with the girls from 2008. We played really well and actually managed to win. It was a game we never thought we would be able to win, which made it even more special."

For Maya, the importance of that victory extends beyond the final score. It represents a shared achievement with teammates who had experienced many different moments together. The fact that they managed to overcome expectations in their final appearance made the result especially rewarding.

Discovering the demands of Denmark's highest league

The 2025–2026 season marked another significant stage in Maya's development when she began competing in Denmark's highest women's basketball league. Moving into senior basketball meant facing opponents with greater physical strength, experience and tactical understanding. The pace of the game also required her to make decisions more quickly, while the increased intensity challenged her to improve different aspects of her performance. Rather than being discouraged by those demands, Maya welcomed the opportunity to test herself. "It was really great to experience that level for the first time. We were a very young team last season, and we are going to be a young team again this year. I think playing at a higher level is very important for my development because it challenges me in ways I hadn't experienced before. The physicality, the speed and the skills you need to compete are all different, and you learn so much from playing against stronger opponents."

Her first season brought encouraging moments as well as difficult periods. The team began with two consecutive victories before experiencing a challenging run of results. Despite those setbacks, the players continued working together and eventually reached the playoffs, where they demonstrated their ability to compete. "We started really well by winning our first two games, but after that we didn't win very often. We managed to get another victory later in the season, and I think we competed quite well in the playoffs. We learned a lot together as a team, and it was a really valuable experience to play at that level."

The transition to senior basketball required more than improvements in physical strength and technical ability. Maya also discovered the importance of remaining mentally focused, particularly during close games when every possession could influence the outcome. Those experiences helped the young team develop a better understanding of how to respond when the pressure increased. "I think we learned a lot mentally, especially about how to stay calm when games are close and there is a lot of pressure. We also learned how to play faster and work together more effectively. Another thing we realized was how important it is to make our three-point shots, so I think our shooting improved as well."

One of her notable performances came against SISU in March 2026, when she recorded 11 points and 14 rebounds. That display highlighted her ability to remain influential under the basket against senior opposition. The experience gained during her first senior season has given Maya a stronger foundation for the 2026–2027 campaign. Changes within the squad have created new challenges, particularly with several players moving on to college basketball. Finding the right balance within the team will therefore require time, communication and a willingness to adapt. Maya nevertheless approaches the season with confidence, believing that the lessons from the previous campaign can help the players become more competitive. "Some of our players have gone to college, so we don't have a completely new team, but we do need to figure out the new dynamics. I expect us to compete even better than last year because we understand the league and the level much better now. Hopefully, we can win more games, and I definitely want to keep improving as a player."

The arrival of Skovbakken Sirens from Aarhus has also added another dimension to the Danish women's competition. Maya is familiar with several players involved with the new team and recognizes the experience they bring. "They are a new team from Aarhus in Jutland, and I already know some of their players. They also have some older and very experienced players who have come from Iceland. I think they are going to be a good team, so it will be exciting to play against them."

Her outlook reflects a player who understands that progress requires patience. The opportunity to face different opponents and continue learning remains an important part of what motivates her.

Representing Denmark: an experience that changed her ambitions

While club basketball has provided Maya with a strong foundation, representing Denmark has opened another important chapter in her career. Her first European championship came in 2024, when she joined Denmark's under-16 national team for the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket Division B. Competing internationally introduced her to a different basketball environment. The larger venues, higher competitive standards and professional organization of the tournament made a lasting impression on her. Before that experience, Maya had not fully decided how far she wanted to pursue basketball. Representing her country helped her discover ambitions that extended beyond Denmark. "It was amazing to be part of that team. We had a really good group of players, and we were also very close friends, which made the experience even better. Playing at a bigger tournament, with bigger courts and a more professional environment, was something completely new for me. I think that experience was very important, especially because I dream about playing outside Denmark one day. Before I turned 16, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with basketball, but experiencing that higher level really lit a fire inside me and made me want to go further."

That growing ambition became one of the most meaningful outcomes of the tournament. The experience allowed her to see what international basketball could offer and encouraged her to think more seriously about the possibilities ahead.

A team built on friendship and togetherness

Denmark finished sixth at the 2024 European under-16 championship, an achievement Maya still remembers with pride. The team's strength came from the different qualities within the squad. Taller players provided a presence near the basket, while the guards contributed speed and creativity. Their ability to work together made them a competitive side throughout the tournament. "We had a really good team with some very talented tall players and some smaller guards who were also excellent. Everyone brought something different, and we played really well together. We also had so much fun, and I think enjoying ourselves helped us perform better on the court."

The friendships within the squad made the experience especially rewarding. Playing for Denmark gave Maya the opportunity to share her passion with teammates who were equally determined to improve, while their collective success strengthened her belief in what could be achieved through teamwork. Following her experiences at under-16 level, Maya continued representing Denmark at the European under-18 championships in 2025 and 2026. Her first tournament in the older age category presented another demanding challenge. Denmark had a competitive squad but suffered several narrow defeats, demonstrating how small the margins can be in international basketball. "I think we had a really good team in my first year with the under-18s, and we actually played quite well. Unfortunately, we lost some very close games, which was disappointing. This year, though, I think we did really well. We finished tenth out of twenty teams, which was actually better than I had expected. I was really positively surprised by how well we performed because we just kept working hard throughout the tournament."

A year later, Maya returned to the European stage with greater confidence and a more substantial contribution across different areas of the game. Her performances showed how much she had progressed since her first international tournament two years earlier. She became one of Denmark's leading rebounders while also contributing more consistently to the team's scoring. One of her standout appearances came against Ireland on 7 August 2026. Maya scored 17 points, collected nine rebounds and provided three assists in Denmark's 68–61 victory. She also made three shots from beyond the arc and grabbed five offensive rebounds. Those performances demonstrated her ability to make an impact in different ways. Her contribution extended from securing possession and defending opponents to creating scoring opportunities when Denmark needed them.

The determination behind every rebound

One of the most noticeable developments in Maya's game has been her improvement as a rebounder.  For Maya, rebounding begins with a conscious decision to compete for the ball. Positioning and physical ability are important, although she believes the mental approach plays an equally significant role. "I think rebounding is very much about your mindset. You have to make the decision that you are going to fight for the rebound and really go after the ball. It takes a lot of focus, and I think that is something I have improved over time."

Her explanation offers an insight into the way she approaches her development. The willingness to make an effort on every possession, regardless of whether she is directly involved in scoring, is an important part of her contribution. It also connects with the defensive qualities she admired in her older sister when she was younger. As Maya continues to develop her own playing style, that determination has become one of the strengths she brings to the court. The ambition to play basketball abroad remains an exciting possibility, especially after discovering how much she enjoys competing at an international level. Her dream of one day making basketball her profession gives her another reason to continue working towards her goals. Throughout her journey, the people around her have remained important. Her father introduced her to the sport, her siblings influenced the way she sees the game, and her teammates and coaches have helped her develop both confidence and experience. Maya's progress can already be seen in her performances, particularly through her growing contribution as a rebounder and defender. Her enthusiasm for basketball, however, reveals just as much about why she continues to push herself. For Maya, basketball has grown from a family tradition into a passion that now plays a central role in her life. The journey that began with her father as her first coach continues to bring new opportunities, and her determination to make the most of them gives her plenty to look forward to.
