There is something powerful about a basketball player whose greatest qualities become even more meaningful through the way she shares them with others. Danielė Paunksnytė can score at an extraordinary level, create opportunities with her vision and read situations before they fully unfold, yet the essence of her game reaches beyond individual numbers. The Lithuanian point guard wants to feel a team around her; play for something she deeply believes in and use every step of her own development to keep moving forward. Basketball has already taken her from Mažeikiai to Plungė, from Vilnius to international championships and the senior Lithuanian national team, while another beautiful chapter now awaits her with the Boston College Eagles in the United States. Her ability to connect ambition with loyalty, individual quality with collective purpose and an enormous love for basketball with the courage to keep discovering how far it can take her.

An active girl found the place where she could be herself

Long before basketball became such an important part of her life, Danielė already possessed an energy that needed somewhere to go. Sitting still was hardly the obvious direction for a young girl who enjoyed being involved in activities at school and naturally gravitated towards sport. Her first idea was actually to become involved in football. Her mother saw the possible injury risks differently, and another ball eventually found its way into Danielė’s hands. A basketball class at school created an unexpected beginning. Danielė played alongside the boys and caught the attention of a coach who recognized something in her. An invitation to attend basketball practice followed, and what could easily have remained one enjoyable school activity gradually became the foundation of her life as an athlete. “At a very young age, I was a very active kid,” Danielė says. “I always went to all of the school activities. Actually, I wanted to play soccer, but my mom did not let me because she said that there was a big risk of injuries. Eventually, during sports classes at school, we played basketball. I played basketball with the boys, and a coach saw me and told me that I needed to come to basketball practice. That is how everything started. For the first three years of my basketball journey, I played with the boys’ team, and then my mom drove me to another city so I could play with the girls.”

Those first years already required commitment from the people around her. Danielė grew up in Mažeikiai in northwestern Lithuania before travelling to Plungė, approximately sixty kilometers from her hometown, to continue developing. Her journey became considerably bigger at thirteen, when Vilnius and Vilniaus Kibirkštis entered her life. The distance from home increased dramatically, although the possibilities were waiting for her. Lithuania has a relationship with basketball that can be felt far beyond the lines of a court. Danielė grew up surrounded by that culture and became an enthusiastic EuroLeague follower herself. Žalgiris Kaunas naturally occupies a special place in that passion as the Lithuanian representative she loves supporting, while attending games allowed her to experience basketball from another perspective alongside playing it herself. “I was a big fan of the EuroLeague, and I still am. I watch all of the teams in the EuroLeague, and my favorite one is probably Žalgiris Kaunas because it is a Lithuanian team. I went to a lot of basketball games. When I started playing basketball, I just felt like it was my destination, the place where I feel most like myself.”

That feeling helps explain the choices that followed. Moving to Vilnius at 13 years old meant leaving the family behind at an age when most young players still have their parents nearby every day. Danielė spent the following five years living hundreds of kilometers away from them and sometimes returned home for only a few days during an entire year. She was learning independence at the same time as she was developing her basketball. Vilniaus Kibirkštis eventually gave her opportunities at senior club level and on the European stage. Danielė played two seasons in the EuroCup with the club, including a campaign that followed an attempt to qualify for the EuroLeague. Her path had started in a small Lithuanian city. It was steadily becoming an international one.

Fifty-five points showed her ability

Talent sometimes produces a performance that remains vivid years after the final buzzer. Danielė experienced one of those games during her early period in Vilnius. Playing in the Lithuanian under-16 competition, she entered a final and delivered a performance that almost sounds fictional when reduced to its numbers. “I think it was my first or second year in Vilnius, and I played in the Lithuanian under-16 league. In the final, I scored 55 points and I think I had ten assists. My shooting percentage was amazing, and I had around 75 efficiency points. That is probably the game that I will never forget.”

She considers herself a playmaking point guard. Her eyes are constantly moving across the floor, searching for spaces, teammates and opportunities. Reading what a possession requires appeals to her as much as finishing it herself. Statistics therefore occupy a surprisingly small place in the way she evaluates her basketball. Winning together matters considerably more. “On the basketball court, I do not care about my stats. I do not usually look at them. I am more of a team player because I do not care how many points I score. I just need my team to win. I would say that I am more of a playmaking point guard because I like to pass the ball and I like to see the court. I think I feel the moment and read what is best to do at that time.”

That description reveals a quality that cannot simply be measured through points or assists. Danielė wants to understand the game. Her instinct is directed towards the whole picture, and that mentality allows her talent to become something others can benefit from as well.

Wearing Lithuania across her chest carries a meaning of its own

Representing Lithuania added another layer to Danielė’s journey. Her first European Championship at under-16 level in 2022 did not produce the result she had hoped for. Lithuania finished 15^th and dropped into Division B. Disappointment became part of her international development, yet her commitment to the national program never depended on medals. The jersey itself means something profound to her. “It is always a pleasure to play for the national team. The national team is the team that I will play for no matter what. Lithuania means a lot to me. I also want to show that girls’ and women’s basketball need to be supported more. Right now, women’s basketball in Lithuania is going up. For a long time, the men received most of the attention, but now it is becoming a little different. I want to continue contributing to that.”

Her words show how closely personal ambition and a larger purpose can coexist. Danielė wants to become the best basketball player she can be, while also understanding that every generation can help create more space for the next one. Visibility matters. Support matters. Young girls seeing possibilities in women who came before them matters. Her connection to Lithuania therefore extends beyond representing a country during a tournament. She wants the women’s game to grow with her.

A silver medal built through something nobody could scout

The difficult experience of 2022 eventually became part of a much more beautiful international story. At the 2025 FIBA Under-20 Women’s European Championship, Lithuania created a tournament that Danielė expects to carry with her for the rest of her life. “Last year’s under-20 European Championship is probably the one I will never forget because we won the silver medal, and that was the only silver medal for Lithuania in the women’s under-20 competition. Our coaches and everyone around us said that nobody could scout our hearts. The team was passionate, and the energy within the group was amazing. That silver medal is something I think I will remember for my entire life.”

Danielė contributed her own remarkable chapter to that championship. During the tournament, she produced a 43-point performance that broke Lithuania’s single-game scoring record at that level. It was another demonstration of the scoring ability already visible during her younger years, now expressed in one of the most demanding stages of European youth basketball. The record is significant. The way Danielė remembers the tournament says even more about her. Her first thoughts return to the group, its passion and the connection between its members. Individual brilliance found its greatest meaning inside collective success.

A team she felt she could play with forever

The following summer brought another under-20 European Championship and a Lithuanian side that remained largely intact. Expectations naturally increased after silver. Danielė and her teammates entered the tournament aiming for a top eight finish and accomplished that objective, competing closely with European powers including France and Spain. Years of sharing practices, games, victories and disappointments had created familiarity that translated directly onto the floor. “Our team was strong because not much changed from last year. Only a few players were different, and our goal was to finish between first and eighth place, which we did. We only lost to great teams such as France and Spain by a few points, so that meant a lot. It was another passionate team, a team that I could play for forever because I know everyone and everyone knows me. We connect off the court and on the court as well. I am happy with this year’s results, and next year will be my final year with the youth national team.”

The idea of being able to play with a group forever captures something essential in Danielė. Connection is not secondary to her basketball. It influences basketball itself. Knowing someone away from the court can make a pass more natural on it. Trust can create an extra rotation defensively, another run in transition or the willingness to give someone else the decisive shot. Danielė’s instinctive ability to read situations becomes even stronger when surrounded by players whose tendencies and personalities she understands. That is where her identity as a playmaker and her identity as a teammate beautifully meet.

The senior national team showed her where the journey can lead

Another milestone arrived in 2026 when Danielė made her debut with Lithuania’s senior national team. Suddenly, players she had watched established themselves at the highest levels became teammates during practices and games. For a young guard entering that environment, the basketball challenge alone could have been intimidating. The welcome she received changed that experience. Experienced internationals offered guidance, while the presence of several familiar faces from Kibirkštis made the transition easier. Danielė was given room to belong rather than feeling that she first had to prove she deserved to be there. “It was amazing to play with players who compete professionally at the highest level. During practices and games, they were always there for me. Whenever I needed something, they helped me and helped me adapt to the senior national team. Around half of the team from my club, Kibirkštis, was there as well, which made it great. I did not feel like I was too young or worse than anyone else because everyone made me feel special. That meant a lot to me.”

That experience also gave Danielė another destination to work towards. Lithuania will be one of the host nations of FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2027, offering the possibility of representing her country at a major senior championship on home soil. “I hope I will be there with the senior team next year, and I hope I will get the opportunity to play with them.”

Boston opens the door to a dream she has carried for years

Danielė’s next chapter will take her farther from home than ever before. She is joining the Boston College Eagles, entering American college basketball and a completely different environment in which to develop her game. The move contains both excitement and uncertainty. Danielė is willing to acknowledge both. Leaving Lithuania naturally brings nerves, yet moving away from home is an experience she encountered unusually early in life. At thirteen, she had already learned that growth sometimes asks a person to exchange familiarity for possibility. “At the same time, I am a little bit nervous, but I am also happy and I cannot wait to do something new. In some ways, it is not completely new because when I was 13 years old, I had to move from my hometown to Vilnius, which is around 400 kilometers away, and I lived there for five years without my parents. I only came home for a few days during some years. Playing in the States was always my dream. There are great facilities, great coaching staff and everything you need to improve and develop your skills. I am very excited to go there and see how everything will be.”

Boston College will challenge her in ways that Lithuania could never completely prepare her for. There will be another culture, another basketball rhythm, new teammates, new opponents and a new daily life. Those differences are also where the opportunity lies. Danielė has already shown that she can turn distance into development. Mažeikiai gave her a beginning, Plungė expanded her possibilities and Vilnius demanded independence while opening doors towards European basketball. Boston now offers a new horizon. The numbers will always be part of Danielė story. 55 points in a Lithuanian youth final cannot simply disappear from memory. Neither can a 43-point national-team performance, a Lithuanian scoring record or an historic European silver medal. Those achievements demonstrate the level of talent that has taken her from a young girl playing alongside boys to Boston College and the Lithuanian senior national team. Her talent gives Danielė possibilities. Her perseverance allows her to keep pursuing them. Her vision enables her to make other players part of what she creates. Her love for Lithuania keeps her connected to where everything began, while her curiosity and courage continue pulling her towards places she has yet to discover. She is still growing, still learning and still discovering how far her abilities can reach. Wherever basketball takes Danielė Paunksnytė next, she already carries something that cannot be taught through facilities, tactics or statistics: a heart that knows how to play for something bigger than itself.
