Hij is een harde werker op het basketbalveld, en een echte aanwinst voor Lokomotief Rijswijk. Artur Tymyniuk (links van de beker met nummer 9) is een speler die alles doet wat nodig is, met hart, inzet en een ongeëvenaarde toewijding. Basketbal is niet zijn eerste sport geweest; hij was eerst te vinden op de worstelmat. Basketbal leidde hem via Italië naar Nederland, waar hij sinds 2022 speelt voor Lokomotief Rijswijk. Daar ontwikkelde hij zich tot een allround speler, maar ook tot een leider.

Artur groeide op in een gezin waar sport geen keuze was, maar een vanzelfsprekendheid. “Mijn ouders wilden altijd dat mijn broer en ik sport deden,” vertelt Artur. “Eerst ging mijn broer worstelen, dus ging ik dat ook doen. Daarna volgde ik hem naar boogschieten, en uiteindelijk naar basketbal,” vertelt hij.

Artur koos op zijn elfde bewust voor één sport. “Ik besloot te stoppen met alles, behalve basketbal. Ik voelde dat daar mijn toekomst lag. Ik zag mezelf beter worden, en het gaf me plezier en richting.” Zijn ouders speelden daarin een sleutelrol; niet door druk, maar door onvoorwaardelijke steun, iets wat tot op de dag van vandaag voelbaar is in zijn manier van spreken over familie.

Hoe worstelen hem leerde te blijven staan

Hoewel basketbal zijn passie werd, liet zijn achtergrond in worstelen sporen na in zijn spel. “Die sport heeft mij geleerd om stevig te staan, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Ik verdedig hard, zonder op te geven,” zegt hij trots.

In zijn eerste jaar bij Lokomotief Rijswijk kreeg hij speelminuten vooral vanwege zijn verdediging. “Ik had aanvallend nog niet veel gebracht, maar ik kon de beste spelers van de tegenstander uitschakelen. Daarom stond ik op het veld. De verdediging gaf mij een plek.” Inmiddels is Artur uitgegroeid tot een allround speler die scoort, leiderschap toont, verdedigt en aanvallen opbouwt.

“Ik wil van basketbal mijn werk maken”

De droom om professioneel basketballer te worden ontstond al vroeg. “Natuurlijk droom je eerst van de NBA, maar toen ik ouder werd, begreep ik: dit is meer dan alleen een droom; dit kan mijn beroep worden. Ik wil dit elke dag doen.”

Met zijn team in Oekraïne beleefde hij in de jeugd grote successen: tweemaal kampioen, eerst in Divisie B (na een enorm spannende wedstrijd die eindigde in 62-61), en daarna in Divisie A. “We hadden een compleet team. Zelfs de grootste academies konden ons niet aan. Als je één speler stopte, stond de volgende al klaar.” Het succes op jonge leeftijd gaf Artur het vertrouwen dat hij iets bijzonders in handen had.

Zijn grootste voorbeeld is Kobe Bryant. “Ik geloof in zijn ‘Mamba Mentality’. Als je genoeg werkt, verdien je je plek. Ik train altijd, ik sla nooit over. Soms zeggen coaches dat ik moet rusten, maar ik weet waarvoor ik het doe.”

Italië als eerste stap buiten de comfortzone

De overstap naar Italië was geen eenvoudige keuze. “Ik kreeg de kans, maar wilde eigenlijk blijven. Mijn moeder zei: ‘Je moet gaan,’ dus deed ik dat.” In eerste instantie troostte hij zichzelf met het idee dat hij in de zomer terug naar huis kon, tot de oorlog uitbrak.

“Ik kon niet meer terug. Dat was mentaal zwaar, maar ik wist waarom ik daar was: om beter te worden, om te groeien, dus ging ik door.” Dit typeert Artur; kiezen is niet altijd de makkelijkste weg, maar kan je wel naar het juiste pad leiden.

Lokomotief Rijswijk: een plek om te bloeien en een thuis om in te groeien

In 2022 arriveerde hij in Nederland, waar zijn broer en zus al woonden. Zijn eerste indruk van Lokomotief was gelijk positief. “Mijn eerste training was spannend. Lars Jansen, onze coach, was direct; geen tijd voor onzin, je komt hier om te werken. Dat was precies wat ik zocht.”

Hoewel het team eigenlijk vol zat, besloot de coach hem toch een kans te geven. “Hij nam de beslissing, maar ik denk dat het voor ons allebei geweldig heeft uitgepakt.”

Artur vindt bij Lokomotief meer dan alleen een team. “Het voelt als familie voor mij. Je leert hier meer dan basketbal. Je leert je karakter te vormen en te groeien. Ook geldt: op tijd komen, respect tonen, samenwerken; dat zijn eigenschappen die je je hele leven gaat meenemen.”

Een succesvol seizoen met een landskampioenschap en de Basketball Cup

Het seizoen 2023-2024 was er één om nooit te vergeten. Na de halve finales van het jaar ervoor, groeide de drang om terug te slaan. “We verloren sterke spelers, zoals Noah Slingerland en Miles de Koning. Anderen werden sterker. We wonnen de Basketball Cup met 30 punten verschil van UBALL, en in de kampioensfinale tegen Leiden begonnen we met een 15-0 voorsprong. Ze konden niet scoren in het begin, wij wel. Alles wat we hadden geoefend, kwam eruit. We domineerden dat seizoen; niet veel teams winnen beide prijzen in één jaar.”

Liefde overstijgende woorden van een moeder

Zijn moeder sprak haar trots uit in tranen: “Ik ben zo dankbaar voor wat Nederland Artur heeft gegeven. Een plek waar hij zich thuis voelt. Ik zie hoe hij groeit, als speler en als mens. Ik hoop dat hij zijn dromen volgt, waar die hem ook brengen.”

Haar woorden raken, en haar liefde is voelbaar. Artur mag dan zelf op het veld staan, maar zijn familie staat altijd achter hem.

He is a hard worker on the basketball court, and a true asset to Lokomotief Rijswijk. Artur Tymyniuk is a player who does whatever it takes, with heart, commitment, and unmatched dedication. Basketball wasn’t his first sport; he initially took to the wrestling mat. It was basketball that eventually brought him from Italy to the Netherlands, where he has been playing for Lokomotief Rijswijk since 2022. There, he has developed into not only an all-around player, but also a leader.

Artur grew up in a household where sports were not a choice, but a given. “My parents always wanted my brother and me to do sports,” Artur explains. “My brother started with wrestling, so I followed. Then came archery, and finally basketball,” he says.

At the age of eleven, Artur made a conscious decision to focus on just one sport. “I decided to quit everything except basketball. I felt that was where my future lay. I could see myself improving, and it gave me joy and direction.” His parents played a key role in this, not by pressuring him, but by offering unconditional support, something that’s still evident in the way he speaks about his family.

How wrestling taught him to stand his ground

Though basketball became his passion, his background in wrestling left its mark on his game. “That sport taught me how to stand firm, literally and figuratively. I defend hard, and I never give up,” he says proudly.

In his first year at Lokomotief Rijswijk, his playing time came primarily because of his defense. “I didn’t contribute much offensively yet, but I could shut down the opponent’s best players. That’s why I was on the court. Defense earned me a spot.” Today, Artur has grown into an all-around player who scores, leads, defends, and initiates plays.

“I want to make basketball my career”

The dream of becoming a professional basketball player began early. “Of course, you first dream of the NBA, but as I got older, I realized, this is more than just a dream; it can become my profession. I want to do this every day.”

With his team in Ukraine, he had major success as a youth player: two-time champion, first in Division B (after a nail-biting 62–61 win), and later in Division A. “We had a complete team. Even the biggest academies couldn’t stop us. If you shut down one player, the next would step up.” Those early successes gave Artur the confidence that he had something special.

His biggest role model is Kobe Bryant. “I believe in his ‘Mamba Mentality’. If you work hard enough, you earn your place. I train constantly, I never skip. Sometimes coaches tell me to rest, but I know what I’m working for.”

Italy: a first step outside his comfort zone

The move to Italy wasn’t an easy decision. “I got the opportunity, but I actually wanted to stay. My mom said, ‘You have to go’, so I did.” At first, he comforted himself with the thought that he would return home in the summer, until war broke out.

“I couldn’t go back. That was mentally tough, but I knew why I was there, to improve and grow, so I kept going.” That’s typical of Artur; choosing the hard path, even when it’s not easy, can lead you to the right destination.

Lokomotief Rijswijk: a place to thrive and a home to grow

In 2022, he arrived in the Netherlands, where his brother and sister already lived. His first impression of Lokomotief was immediately positive. “My first practice was intense. Lars Jansen, our coach, was direct, no time for nonsense, you’re here to work. That was exactly what I was looking for.”

Although the team was technically full, the coach still decided to give him a chance. “He made the call, and I think it worked out great for both of us.”

Artur finds more than just a team at Lokomotief. “It feels like family to me. You learn more than just basketball here. You develop your character and grow. You also learn things like punctuality, showing respect, teamwork; those are qualities you’ll carry with you for life.”

A successful season with a national championship and the Basketball Cup

The 2023–2024 season was unforgettable. After falling short in the semifinals the year before, the drive to bounce back was immense. “We lost strong players like Noah Slingerland and Miles de Koning. Others stepped up. We won the Basketball Cup by 30 points against UBALL, and in the championship final against Leiden, we started with a 15–0 lead. They couldn’t score at first, we could. Everything we had practiced came together. We dominated that season; not many teams win both trophies in one year.”
